Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
Do you offer after school pickup / day-care?
A: No. We have found that schools that concentrate on their after
school programs do not have quality martial arts programs - period!
EVERY school that we know in our area that offer the after school programs
fall into the "belt factory"
category we discuss in our "Choosing
A School" page.
Q: I have a four year old who is really
into Power Rangers/Ninja Turtles and has expressed an interest in martial arts. I would like to get
him started - do you accept children this age?
A: Unfortunately we do not. SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY! Children at this age will not receive
or absorb martial arts training except a little coordination - hardly worth your hard earned money. Although it is an
arbitrary age, we do not start accepting kids until age six. BE CAREFUL- There are schools that will sucker
you into a "Tiny Tots" or "Little Tigers" program that will
actually guarantee a black belt. This is ridiculous and
it is one of the latest wave of business practices that make a mockery of the
arts.
Q: I am only interested in learning
one style. Do you offer a
separate programs?
A: Yes, however, we strongly believe your martial arts training should include strikes,
joint locks, throws AND ground fighting skills.
Otherwise we see what most commercial schools offer - one style and incomplete training
and/or watered down martial arts. Our school incorporates Tae Kwon Do
& Hap
Ki Do as one program and Jujitsu as another program. For those that want to learn strikes, joint locks, self
control, fitness and better their overall way of life, we offer our
traditional Tae Kwon Do/Hap Ki Do. For
those who are only interested in the combat part of martial arts we offer Combat Jujitsu
as a separate program.
Q: I have been training at another
school but want to change the direction of my training. How do you handle
transfer students?
A: We do not guarantee belts or ranking without evaluating you for
a trial period. Almost 99% of all students who transfer to our school
from local schools need to go down a few ranks and even then, most need to do
some serious "catching up". You would be amazed how many high
ranking belts from other schools do not have even the basic of techniques or
knowledge. Though this is no fault of the student (we blame the poor
instruction), if they are dedicated to training 2-3 times per week, catching
up is usually never a problem.
Q: I have a black belt from another
school and would like to transfer to your school. What is the process?
A: We need to evaluate you first. We also want to see your
knowledge of practical self defense, techniques and your knowledge of your forms and their respective applications.
Once we evaluate and verify your
existing certificate, we will see if you can continue training at the same level at our
school. We will be honest and fair with you. If you are currently
certified through the World Tae Kwon Do Federation, Kukkiwon, Korea Hap Ki Do
Federation we will need your full name and date of birth. If your certificate has your
instructor's signature, it is not a valid certificate from ANY
organization!
Q: Does your school compete in
tournaments?
A: We hold our own tournament once in a while and make it an invitational - we only invite those who we know will be
competitive, yet respectful to others. If a student is interested, they
may compete at other tournaments, but we do not emphasize them or tournament
training.
We find tournaments can be useful. However, over the last
few years we have become increasingly disappointed in the disorganization, the lack of training with the judges
and more importantly the behavior of school owners/masters at
these events. We also do not subscribe to the point of view that everyone
should get a trophy or medal. Tournaments are COMPETITIONS and with that,
there are winners and losers. If we shield students from disappointment
and inadequancy, they will be denied the most valuable lesson of perseverance -
the chance to survive life's challenges.
Q: I want my child to learn discipline
and respect and confidence. How can martial arts achieve this?
A: The nature of traditional (not modern) martial arts takes a process
oriented approach toward training that emphasizes self improvement, discipline
and respect. Modern styles emphasize getting the most points in a ring
match, which is why you see very little respect and discipline in the
training. Structure and good manners are emphasized
and over a period of 3-6 months, students progress very well.
However, it must also be repeated at home! Children can only be taught to
a certain level in class, however if it is ignored at home, it can be
confusing for them. Repetition and consistency training along with
consequences for their actions are key aspects of discipline and respect for
others.
Q: How often may I train?
A: We have classes Monday - Saturday. You can come as often as you would
like...that's right - unlimited classes! Kids may not take
the adult classes, however adults may take the kids classes. For specific
times, look at our schedule of classes.
We encourage 2-3 classes per week minimum to see any type of noticeable
progression in our Tae Kwon Do program.
Q: How much is your monthly tuition?
A: Rates range from $50-$110 per month depending on the program and
length of time you decide to join.
